The Beginning of EdenHaus — Our Maine Coon Madness Continues
Remember how I told you we went to see one Maine Coon and came home with two? Well, apparently bringing home two of these magnificent, oversized, furry creatures wasn't going to be enough excitement for one household. Life had something else in store for us. And this time, it wasn't funny. One of our beautiful boys, Raphael, became very sick. We had fallen completely in love with these cats, and suddenly we were facing something I knew absolutely nothing about.
FIP. Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Three little letters I had never heard of. Three little letters that would turn our world upside down. We Didn't Have Time to Waste! Thankfully, our breeder recognized the possibility of FIP and knew we needed to act quickly.
Our veterinarian wasn't convinced that FIP was the culprit. She believed it was unlikely, but she was willing to treat Raphael for it. There was just one problem. The medication had to be ordered. And when you're watching a kitten you love become terribly ill, waiting isn't exactly an option you want to entertain! Our breeder immediately went to work and managed to locate medication so we could begin treatment while waiting for the medicine ordered through our veterinarian. I will forever be grateful for her help.
And then something wonderful happened.
Raphael began improving almost immediately!
Oh, the relief! Watching this little guy begin to turn around was something I cannot adequately describe. There was hope. And with every passing day, that hope grew. Maybe We Could Finally Breathe! Raphael continued his treatment, and eventually we reached the day we had been waiting for. He had completed his course of medication! We thought perhaps the worst was finally behind us. We could breathe again.
Or so we thought….
Because if there's one thing I've learned about life with Maine Coons, it's that just when you think you've figured things out, something comes along to remind you that you most certainly have not! And this time, it wasn't a shredded roll of toilet paper, a broken decoration, or a furry thief stealing something off the kitchen counter. It was much worse.
Raphael relapsed. The disease we thought we had defeated was back. And this time, our precious boy was about to face the fight of his life.
We had absolutely no idea how close we would come to losing him.
To be continued…
